Green light for the project to enlarge the MACBA

The Government Commission has given initial approval for the project to enlarge the Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA), with a new building in Plaça dels Àngels to offer 2,110 m² of new rooms and a viewing deck of 349 m² open to the public. The project has a cost of 13.85 million euros and should be completed in January 2027.

A public scrutiny period of 30 working days now begins, and once the project comes through this stage successfully the final approval will enable the work to be tendered in June and to get under way in November this year.

The enlargement of the new museum, along with the new CAP Raval Nord primary healthcare centre in the Capella de la Misericòrdia and the future urban revamp of the square, form part of a transformation that will facilitate uses and improve public space around Plaça dels Àngels in the coming years.

The project for the new building was developed by the joint venture between Harquitectes and Christ & Gantenbein, winners of the public competition to enlarge the Convent dels Àngels, organised by the General Council of the MACBA.
